Teamwork, perfectionism and writing stereotypes

Our time due to startups and online business boom is defined by new stereotypes that most almost tend to become taboos. Learn to recognize and bypass them if you wish to succeed in writing.

You must surely at least once have found yourself among too optimistic people who didn’t allow any kind of negative thinking. You definitely were a “victim” of similar speeches on teamwork and the importance of perfection in everything you do. Well, guess what, we are all humans and everything is relevant, while nothing is prohibited if it limits you.

Creativity is triggered by different things for every person and especially when it comes to writing, it demands strong critical thinking.

How positive is positive thinking… all the time?

I guess I am a positive person and even during very difficult times, I admit that perhaps I have been irrationally optimistic. However, my negative thoughts, my fears and my low tolerance to risk is my safety net and at this point of my life I am finally able to accept them as gifts. It’s true, without positive thinking many of us would never succeed in anything but it’s the negative thinking that protects us from huge stupidity and risks.

The most common question I get from aspiring writers is “should I give up my job?” and most of the times I want to answer “are you nuts?”  Too much optimism, being positive all the time and getting a divorce from reality and logic, is one of the greatest scourges of our times.

It is charming to translate everything in our favor but let me remind you that you are a writer, a man of thought and reason, you are supposed to keep both feet firmly on the ground and your words are shaping reality.

Therefore, you ought to remain optimistic only within logic. Those old-fashioned lists with pros and cons when you don’t have a clue what to do, they work. The negative opinion of people around you is not always because they are jealous of you or because they are “toxic”, “energy vampires” or anything else is made up by the unbearable lightness of our time.

Chasing your dreams is remarkable according to my dictionary but not if it poses your dignity or family to danger. Do not deny reality; fight it as much as you can but choose to live within it.

Is writing… a teamwork?

I have attended numerous, numerous meetings for things that had to do with my work. I have come to the conclusion that most of my productive time was unnecessarily spent on things that I could have done a lot faster and with much better results.

A team is not always panacea. Team by team differ a lot and no one guarantees you that everyone is there to help, knows how to help, wants to help or has the ability to help.

Yes, the right team which is a rather rare thing, is a unique experience and will reveal aspects of your talent you’ve never imagined existed. However, the wrong team will delay you, cut your wings, limit your creativity and finally, will let you down. It is not so terrible, let’s admit it; sometimes teamwork is simply a taboo that you are forbidden to question but it is bad for you.

One more thing: Writing is a lonely work. Most of the time, the team is there to give you the information, ideas and the encouragement needed but this is how far it goes. It is your job to put the words in the right place in order to work in the unique, magical ways of writing.

Are you a perfectionist and what has it cost you?

We live in the era of speed and we will not be on this planet for long. These two facts can make the life of a perfectionist a misery. I was a perfectionist for the biggest part of my career and what I found is that I didn’t do even half of what I dreamed.

Writing and perfectionism should go hand in hand but they are the most poisonous combination, too. I found peace and liberated myself when I set limits to my perfectionism. There is always room for improvement for a piece of writing and you will never be absolutely confident that it is finished. My books have been printed years now and I would give anything to change whole pages, fix a sentence or add a few more paragraphs.
But this won’t help you. You must learn to say “that’s it”.

I would never have launched Live Write Earn if I didn’t overcome my obsessions. I would surely love more and more frequent posts, better design and many more stuff to polish it. I see minor mistakes in older posts or I use to write just like now, directly to the CMS and I am surprised to myself. However, now that I have been able to overcome such a barrier, I finally have the time to focus on substance, share my thoughts and express myself which is liberating.

I know of many people who plan to launch their own website or blog and are still thinking about it. Guess what. It would be great if we all had the luxury to do things exactly the way we want. However, we are here, now and for a short period of time. You will never find the time, the perfect mood, the money or even the amazing partners to do something exactly the way you dream.

So, if you just take that first step by ignoring the less important things and focusing to writing, your passion and to everything you wish to share, then you might understand that these are the important things in life. :)
