Ways to practice writing

A few days ago, through the #LWE very first newsletter, I asked for everyone’s questions regarding this profession. I got the same question from 4 different people. Many writers who wish to become professionals wish to know the ways to practice in writing so that to be (or feel) ready for the writing market.

To be honest, that was a question I didn’t expect and I’m glad it was made because for some reason I didn’t think it would be such an issue. So before I analyze all the available ways one can practice in professional writing, let me first say a few things about an important issue – barrier that might have never crossed your mind.

Are you a writer?

You have to ask yourself and give an honest answer. 9 out of 10 times the answer I get is negative, even if I ask people who have numerous published articles and amazing writing skills. This is because writing is one of those professions filled with stereotypes. Writers to most people’s minds are caricatures.

An author in most people’s minds, usually leads a bohemian life, he drinks and smokes a lot, he doesn’t easily laugh and he rarely talks. And while he is too introverted to even get out of his humble loft, paradoxically, he always dates the most gorgeous women.

Reality check: In Real Reality, an author is a man or a woman who rarely writes only literature if he wishes to make ends meet, is a morning person and although the stereotype of him being unsocial is true, when online, he never stops talking because this is the only effective way to market himself.

A writer according to my book is anyone who has been exposed through his writing. That is, having published articles online or in blogs, portals and social media. Nowadays, it doesn’t really matter whether he was traditionally published or was paid for his writing. I know amazing writers who made a huge impact but no printing house or website ever paid them (even though they used their articles extensively).

So, if you like writing and mainly if you do write, maybe what holds you back is not practicing but admitting it. Don’t hesitate just admit it, it’s not such a big deal, you are a writer.

On the other hand, if you are just starting and you wish to specialize in a particular writing area, as for instance, copywriting, online articles, website writing, ads etc., then you have the following options:

Blogging

Your own blog is by far the best and most deeper way to discover your voice. To meet and evolve your own writing style, choose your themes and the types of articles that better suit you, receive direct feedback from your audience and gain confidence.

So, if you wish to write but you are stuck and you don’t know where to begin then don’t think about it anymore, create your blog today and start practicing every day. In less than 3 months you will know whether you really enjoy writing, your strongest points and where it leads you. Also, a blog is a wonderful way to practice another language. Just create a blog and start writing in the language you wish to excel.

Furthermore, for the totally clueless with the technical stuff of a blog, these days I plan to publish a small e-book with all the necessary instruction. Aka, how to create a blog, how to choose your topic, the basic word processor commands, the marketing required, how to spread your articles in social media and how to connect your blog with various advertising income streams.

In action

If you are starting now but you know exactly the writing type you are interested in, such as website copy or articles for specific topics then find any website or portal you like and write your own content for every page or subtopic.

Services, vision, news, products, themed columns etc. Write small pieces of text for every different page. Then find a professional writer to take a look and tell you what he thinks of your writing.

If you don’t know a professional to help you then send them here at LiveWriteEarn@gmail.com and I promise not to take too long to give you an opinion.

You can do the same with slogans, ads or with any type of writing you are interested in. Of course, in your case too, a blog is a great solution since it will help you practice on your vocabulary and research.

A very good tip would be to pick a blog topic that you know nothing about so that every article will demand heavy research. For example, try topics such as green building, architecture, Alzheimer’s and in general, topics you have no idea about.

Can you take criticism?

Finally, if you haven’t decided yet where this is going and you are still wondering if it’s worth it although you write for a long time, then send me a small writing sample and I will try to give you some advice.

However, I must let you know that I don’t use sweet talk and although I would be happy to help, in case you can’t take criticism, this might be a bit unpleasant. :)

But it will be good for you, because professional writing is a tough job and you will be criticized all the time by usually clueless critics. Therefore, it will be useful to be aware of the actual value of your writing, in case you wish to make a living as a writer.
